Massachusetts Caribbean Week Law Anniversary
10th Anniversary Celebration

Lewis and the Celebration Committee invites your participation in the events
Sunday, August 19 through Thursday, August 23, 2001.
We expect to have a full roster of events at different venues including
recitation of poetry, display of books written on the Caribbean or by Caribbean
authors, as well as dance performances, display of arts & crafts, costumes and
musical performances from the various Caribbean Islands.
We begin the week with an ecumenical service in collaboration with Mrs.
Lurnine Munoz-Bennett, followed by an opening ceremony at the State House/Great
Hall, two community event one at Codman Square/Great Hall the other at Unity
Sports and Cultural Association culminating with an Extravaganza on City Hal
Plaza on Thursday, August 23, 2001, from 5 - 8 p.m.
Senate Bill 1108 promulgated that the Governor declare the last week of
August to be celebrated as Caribbean Week in Massachusetts. Senator Bill Owens
and State Representative Shirley Owens-Hicks introduced the bill and were
supported by the Massachusetts Black Legislative Caucus and members of the
Caribbean community.
