University of Guyana – Atlanta University Center Project Group to Hold Conference on Conflict in Guyana at Howard University

Atlanta, Georgia (November 11, 2002): A conference entitled "Diaspora Forum on Guyana: Conflict Analysis and Resolution", will held at the Ralph Bunche International Center, Howard University, Washington, DC on Saturday, December 14, from 10.00 am to 6.30 pm. This Forum is part of a collaborative, two year project on "Democratization and Conflict Resolution in Guyana" between the Atlanta University Center (ACU) and the University of Guyana (UG), and is co-sponsored by the Department of African Studies, Howard University. The project has been made possible by a small grant from funds, which the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation received from the United States Agency for International Development to conduct an International Development Partnerships Activities Program.

The Forum aims at sharpening the focus of Guyanese in the United States on the challenges and opportunities in Guyana. It would bring together academics and other professionals from Guyana and in the United States, representatives of the Guyanese civil society, and political activists in the United States.

Four consecutive panels, each lasting one hour and thirty minutes, will constitute the format of the Forum. The titles of the panels are as follows:

  • Perspectives on Stratification, Political Rivalry, and Ethnic Insecurities;
  • Cultural Identities and Related Economic Pursuits: National Building or Stumbling Blocks?
  • Relations within the Diaspora and between Guyana and the Diaspora;
  • Strategies for Conflict Management and Conflict Resolution.

Each panel will consist of lead presenters and discussants among whom are Mr. Errol Arthur of the Guyanese American Organization in Washington, DC; Dr. Rishee Thakur, Dr. Mark Kirton and Dr. Clive Thomas of the University of Guyana; Dr. Wilfred David, Dr. Kenrick Hunte and Dr. Tabitha Ishmael of Howard University; Mr. Annan Boodram, Editor-in-Chief of The Caribbean Voice Newspaper and Dr. Gary Girdhari, Editor of Guyana Journal; Mr. Rickford Burke of Clarke Associates International; Dr. Brenda Do-Harris of Bowie State University, Maryland; Dr. Horace Henriques and Dr. Alissa Trotz of Toronto University, Canada; Dr. Percy Hintzen of the University of California; Dr. David Hinds of Temple University; Dr. Ivor Mitchell and Dr. Ganga Persaud of Clark Atlanta University; Mr. Paul Tennessee of the World Federation of Labor and Mr. Clarence Ellis of Ellis Associates.

The conference is spearheaded by Dr. Cedric Grant of Clark Atlanta University, Director of the UG - AUC-UG Project. Coordinators are Mr. Clarence Ellis of Ellis Associates, Maryland, and Dr. Randolph Persaud of American University, Washington, DC.
